Professor Hay is a Clinical Professor of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, Consultant Haematologist, and Director of the Manchester Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre and the UK National Haemophilia Database. Professor Hay acts as an advisor to the Department of Health, NHS England, the European Medicines Agency and NICE.  He is a member of several national committees and reviews for several Haematology Journals including Blood, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and Haemophilia, amongst others. Professor Hay is a globally recognised authority on the management of bleeding disorders. He has written more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, guidelines, chapters and reviews. He is active in clinical research, both clinical trials and epidemiology and natural history of bleeding disorders.
