NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre

The NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre drives forward pioneering research in the areas of musculoskeletal disease, hearing health, respiratory disease, dermatology and cancer. Hosted by MFT and The University of Manchester, in partnership with The Christie and Salford Royal.

Key Research Areas:

Wythenshawe Hospital

Wythenshawe Hospital is a major teaching hospital for the region and hosts a broad portfolio of research, in collaboration with The University of Manchester. Research across the hospital is focused on clinical and academic strengths, particularly in Cancer, Cardiovascular, Gastroenterology, Medicines Management and Medical Education, Respiratory and Allergy, Wound Healing and Tissue Repair, and Burns and Plastics

MFT is at the cutting-edge of research and innovation. We are now utilising this expertise to address the urgent priorities for research as part of a global, coordinated effort to enhance understanding of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is the second largest Eye Hospital in the UK and benefits both from being part of a major teaching hospital and from its strong ties to The University of Manchester. Staff at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital are engaged in a broad research field, from laboratory studies, through original development in new technology, diagnostics and treatments to a role in global clinical trials on new treatments for ocular disease.

Saint Mary’s Hospital

Saint Mary’s Hospital delivers world class medical services for women, babies and children, as well as being the North West’s major centre for Genetic Medicine through the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine.

Women’s health research at Saint Mary’s spans across gynaecological cancer, fertility, pregnancy disorders and fetal health with the aim of reducing pregnancy complications, increasing fertility and detecting and treating gynaecological cancers.

Trafford General Hospital provides a range of health services, including an urgent care centre, acute medical unit, surgical care, stroke and rehabilitation services and the Manchester Elective Orthopaedic Centre.

The University Dental Hospital of Manchester is one of the key specialist dental hospitals in the UK. Working closely with the University of Manchester our research covers two broad groups of basic science and healthcare science.

The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital sees 200,000 patient visits each year across and supports research in 25 sub-specialities and is internationally recognised as a leader in in five key areas: childhood cancer, child & adolescent mental health, growth disorders and endocrinology, inherited metabolic disease and nephrology.

Manchester Royal Infirmary is a large teaching hospital and a specialist regional centre for kidney and pancreas transplants, haematology and sickle cell disease. Our Heart Centre is a major provider of cardiac services in the region, specialising in cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology.
