Bernie’s story

Bernie has been living with advanced glaucoma for 15 years and has been using prescribed eye drops to help manage the condition. However Bernie is allergic to the preservatives in prescribed medication and has suffered with swollen and itchy eyes as a result. After taking part in research at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Bernie will no longer need to use daily drops and it’s giving her a new lease on life.

I was diagnosed with advanced glaucoma around 15 years ago after my optometrist misdiagnosed my prescription for eyeglasses and I sought a second opinion.

I was allergic to the preservatives in the standard issue glaucoma eye drops. My optometrist would prescribe me an alternative but I suffered terribly with swollen and itchy eyes, I looked like I have done ten rounds with Mike Tyson!

Since being on the study, it is fantastic to know that my pressures can be controlled without having to undergo further surgery.

Previously my glaucoma has been managed with standard issue eye drops and my pressures monitored. However, I now feel empowered to know that I no longer need to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to the management of my glaucoma and should my pressure change over time my consultant can easily help to reduce any fluctuations with the help of the eyeWatch technology.
