Breaking down barriers through R&I internship opportunities

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is working with Manchester Metropolitan University’s (MMU) Diverse Talent Scheme which gives graduates with neurodiverse conditions the opportunity to develop employability skills whilst based in the workplace at MFT.

MMU graduates Kofi and Tanzia, who recently took up three-month internships at MFT in Research and Innovation (R&I) share their experiences, how they have benefitted from the scheme, and why they are encouraging others to embrace this opportunity.

Kofi’s story

38-year-old Kofi Agyemang is a Human Physiology graduate.

“I joined MFT as a Nowgen Centre Assistant/Clinical Trials Support Assistant intern via the scheme, as I saw the role as a great opportunity to gain essential professional skills and experience within a healthcare organisation.

“I have always wanted to be part of the NHS workforce, and this opportunity has enabled me to help plan and organise several events, whilst familiarising myself with work at the Clinical Trials Management Office, as part of the cross-specialty team.

“As the largest family of hospitals and community organisations in the country, I have learnt the importance of embracing equality, diversity and inclusion here at MFT as it is the driving force behind providing excellent care for all patients and participants.

“Thanks to the continuing intern scheme development plan, I have learnt a lot about good clinical practice and research processes, research governance and standard operating procedures that make research outcomes safe and credible.

“The internship has supported my neurodiversity by helping me to be more confident and believe in myself. In a welcoming and supportive environment that embraces equality, diversity and inclusion, it has encouraged me to fully understand the life changing differences equality, diversity and inclusion can make in people’s lives.

“I am delighted to have a three-month extension on my internship at the Nowgen Centre. The working environment at MFT is encouraging, welcoming, warm and developmental. It drives me to want to do better and aspire for more. I would encourage others to apply for similar opportunities should it come their way.”

 Tanzia’s story

25-year-old Tanzia Sheik, graduated with a BSc in Psychology.

Tanzia Sheik

“I applied for the Clinical Trials Assistant internship at MFT because of my strong interest in clinical research and my desire to contribute to meaningful changes in healthcare.

“I wanted to deepen my understanding of how clinical trials work and how they contribute to improving patient care. The opportunity to be involved in clinical research is exciting as it allows me to directly contribute to advancements in healthcare, which can positively impact many lives. The values of MFT strongly align with my passion for making a social difference, and I believe these kinds of opportunities are crucial for anyone looking to build a meaningful career in healthcare or research.

“During my internship, I have been responsible for supporting the clinical team at trial clinics, ensuring smooth operations, and providing administrative support to help manage trial progress. I have also been able to witness firsthand how clinical trials make a real-world difference in patients’ lives, which has been both motivating and rewarding.

“Looking ahead, I am excited to continue building on my clinical research experience and pursue further opportunities in the research and innovation sector. This internship has provided me with the skills, knowledge, and network to take the next step in my career, and I plan to apply these experiences to roles that will allow me to make a positive impact in the field of healthcare research.

“I would strongly encourage others to explore the R&I internship opportunities at MFT, as they provide rich experiences for personal and professional growth, allowing you to build strong interpersonal skills and deepen your knowledge in clinical research and healthcare.”
