Brilliant Basics awards prize for NIHR Manchester CRF’s approach to communication

Congratulations to the research team at the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility who came 3rd in the Trust Wide Brilliant Basics initiative for their creative notice board display reflecting the theme; Q1 communication: listen to what matters to me.

Led by Research Practitioner Tracy Hamrang, the CRF team conducted an audit using feedback from a range of audiences including patients, study participants, carers, students on placement, and nurses from different specialisms.

The team undertook a research methodology approach known as, Actor Network Theory (ANT), to look at the relationships and lines of communications within the research environment. By listening to feedback from different audiences they were able to break down and understand different needs and identify key areas for improvement and development.

The Brilliant Basics initiative was first launched in 2012 by CMFT’s Improving Quality Team to help develop innovative ways to improve patient experience and the working experience for staff, so that they can deliver safe, responsive and personalised health care services.

This year, staff from across CMFT attended an event hosted by Dawn Pike, Director of Nursing, and led by Lorraine Ganley, Deputy Director of Nursing for Community. The campaign holds four themed events per year and is underpinned by the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery Strategy – Proud to care.

The quarterly themes are:

  • Q1 Communication
  • Q2 Leadership & Culture
  • Q3 Professional Excellence
  • Q4 Caring for You – Our Staff Matter

The themes have been launched to reflect the ‘What Matters to Me’ Programme (WMTM) which aims to improve patient care and clinical quality by inspiring and motivating staff to lead a personalised approach to patient experience at CMFT.
