CMFT appoints Director to manage intellectual property portfolio

Kay Callaghan joins Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) as Director of Intellectual Property (IP) and Business Partnerships.

An accomplished business development professional operating within the life sciences sector, and with knowledge gleaned as a research scientist at a diagnostics company, Kay brings a wealth of experience to CMFT.

The focus of Kay’s new role is to unlock the potential for new technologies to deliver high quality care, drive efficiencies and generate income that can be reinvested by CMFT.

Reporting to Keith Chantler, Director of Innovation, Kay is responsible for:

  • Development of Manchester Health Ventures (MHV) Ltd
    MHV is CMFT’s wholly owned company, set up to manage and develop our valuable intellectual and commercial assets, including our contract with TRUSTECH, the NHS Innovation Service. CMFT staff can learn more about IP by reading the First Steps for Innovation Toolkit (hosted on intranet).
  • Innovation adoption
    Accelerating the evaluation and adoption of innovative products and services into CMFT
  • Strategic partnership management
    • Citylabs: attracting and retaining tenants; and providing access to the clinical interface to accelerate the adoption of innovations into the NHS
    • MedTECH Centre: increasing Trust collaborations and creating a pipeline of potential tenants for Citylabs
    • Managing and promoting CMFT’s existing innovation partnerships with The University of Manchester, Health Innovation Manchester, Northern Health Science Alliance and Shelford group
    • Attracting investment into CMFT’s portfolio of intellectual property assets
