NIHR Senior Investigator appointments for MFT researchers

Congratulations to two researchers from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) who have been appointed to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)’s College of Senior Investigators for 2018.

Senior Investigators represent NIHR’s leading researchers as well as the country’s most outstanding leaders of clinical and applied health and social care research. Forty three new Senior Investigator appointments were made in total, including Professor Jonathan Green, Honorary Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at MFT. Professor Ian Bruce, lead clinician for Rheumatology and Director of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre was also one of twelve researchers to be reappointed as a Senior Investigator.

NIHR Senior Investigators form the NIHR College, a prestigious body with a programme of events. They also:

  • provide research leadership to the NIHR Faculty, promoting clinical and applied research in health and social care
  • help in planning and speaking at events
  • host visiting fellows and mentor Trainees
  • constitute a network of experts, able to provide advice to the Department of Health’s Director General for Research and Development.

An independent expert panel advised on the appointments following the eleventh annual NIHR Senior Investigators competition.  Senior Investigators are able to occupy their positions for no more than two terms, in order to ensure turnover.  Professor Gareth Evans, Consultant in Medical Genetics and Cancer Epidemiology has joined a number of researchers to achieve Emeritus Senior Investigator status, given to holders having succeeded twice in open competition completing two terms as a Senior Investigator.

The total College now stands at 200 Senior Investigators.
