Platform for Investigation: More than just a number

Event details

As part of lively programme of events at Manchester Science Festival 2015, researchers from the Interface and Informatics theme of the NIHR Greater Manchester PSTRC will be working with the Public Programmes Team at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a day of interactive and engaging activities that will help the public to question, explore and share ideas on health data.

The Platform for Investigation is a unique pop-up space that will allow researchers to showcase their cutting edge research, acting as a hub for the public to participate in a suite of activities that will prompt dialogue and debate around health information. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore anonymity and find out how much information is required to identify themselves as individuals.

Family-friendly activities will enable participants to investigate why medical records exist and the importance of keeping them up to date to maintain patient safety. A common misconception is that patient records are transferred between primary and secondary care therefore visitors will be challenged to remember as much as possible under time pressure, highlighting the importance of storing accurate information.

Audience experiences and discussions with researchers at the Platform for Investigation will culminate in visitors being invited to vote as to whether or not they would share their healthcare data. The significance of these decisions will be visually demonstrated by looking at how sharing data on a personal level can contribute towards creating a bigger picture, helping to map health conditions in society and improve quality of care.

Platform for Investigation: More than just a number aims to prompt public discussion; visitors will be invited to continue to debate surrounding sharing healthcare data on social media using the #ShareMyData hash tag.
