Critical care research

When people fall critically ill it is important to ensure the most appropriate and effective treatments are provided quickly to ensure every chance of a patient’s recovery.

Whilst many of our therapies focus on organ support and the treatment of infection, we still have much to learn on the best way to treat individual patients who’s illness is often very different from the patient in the bed next to them. The department of adult critical care has an extensive programme in clinical research.  Our portfolio of studies includes large multi-centred trials, smaller local studies and regular audit quality improvement initiatives.

Our main themes include:

  • early diagnosis of infection
  • respiratory failure
  • identification and management of patients falling ill elsewhere in the hospital outside of critical care
