Management of Angle-closure Glaucoma Suspects (MAGS)
Management of Angle-closure Glaucoma Suspects: minimising the implementation gap between new guidance and clinical practice through education and technology
- Hospital – Speciality: Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Glaucoma
- Study type: Questionnaires/Interviews
- Funder: Glaucoma UK
Summary
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and College of Optometrists are organisations that support professions in eye health. These organisations have recently updated guidance on when to refer and treat patients at risk of narrow angle glaucoma (also known as PACS). The guidance recommends a higher threshold of risk for both referral and treatment than what has been used before. To maximise the benefit of this new guidance, clinicians are required to have the knowledge and confidence to implement the guidance in their clinical practice. As part of this study, we will evaluate optometrists’ understanding and implementation of the guidance by surveying optometrists before and after educational interventions.
We will also look at PACS referrals coming into the glaucoma clinics before the guidance was published, after it was published, after the educational intervention and after a technology intervention. In addition, we will speak with patients to find out more about their experiences being examined and identified as having risk factors for angle closure glaucoma via telephone interviews. Information gathered through telephone interviews will be used to develop patient information material for community optometrists to provide to patients to help support clinicians and patients.
Participant group
Glaucoma patients, optometrists, clinicians and educational leads
Participant approach
Participants will be identified by the research team from those attending glaucoma clinics.
Optometrists, clinicians and educational leads will be contacted directly.
