Summary
People who are admitted to hospital with an inflamed pancreas (known as acute pancreatitis), may develop high blood glucose as a result. This may develop for the first time, even in people without diabetes. The number of people with acute pancreatitis in hospital with high blood glucose (also known as hyperglycaemia) currently remains unknown.
Recent advances in technology have led to the availability of devices that continuously measure glucose, known as continuous glucose monitors (CGM). These devices monitor the glucose levels under the skin (subcutaneous tissue) and update glucose measurement every 1-5 minutes. CGM may help doctors monitor glucose levels in hospital. In this study, we would like to test the use of CGM to monitor levels while in hospital. In addition to reviewing CGM glucose levels, we will also be taking blood samples to test for signs of inflammation, insulin depletion, bacterial toxins in the blood and other markers of pancreatitis.

Patients admitted to hospital with acute pancreatitis
Participant approach
Patients will be identified by a member of their clinical care team based upon review of their electronic health record (HIVE).
If deemed suitable, they will be approached by the medical and surgical Advanced Nurse Practitioners who deal with acute pancreatitis as part of their day-to-day job and will be given the study patient information sheet and invited to join the study.
