IBAD-C4: Ileal resection Bile Acid Diarrhoea – C4 validation
Validation of 7α-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one (C4) serum levels as a biomarker of Bile Acid Diarrhoea (BAD) following ileal resection in Crohn’s disease
- Hospitals and specialty: Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, Withington Community Hospital. Surgery
- Study type: Basic Science study involving procedures with human participants
- Funder: Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC)
Summary
Bile Acid Diarrhoea (BAD) is a specific type of diarrhoea that can affect patients when the last part of the small bowel (the ileum) does not absorb bile salts effectively. This can be due to inflammation such as in Crohn’s Disease, or due to this part of the bowel being removed surgically as part of the treatment for Crohn’s Disease. This research aims to validate a new simple blood test that can help in the diagnosis and assessment of treatment of patients with BAD secondary to Crohn’s Disease.
Participant group
Crohn’s disease patients undergoing surgery to remove the ileum
Participant approach
Patient recruitment will be via the gastroenterology and specialist Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) colorectal clinics at Manchester University NHS Trust, as well as the IBD Multi Disciplinary Team Meeting (MDT). Potential participants will be provided with a patient information sheet during a routine clinic visit.
